			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Centennial Closing Ceremonies will be held on Saturday, January 28th at the Depot with FREE lunch!! It will start at 12:30 PM. There will be speakers, a cake decorating contest where the winner gets their picture in the time capsule, and then a cake auction.</p>
<p>If anyone wants to make a donation to the time capsule they have to have it in by 1/21/2012 so it can be properly packaged. Donations can be dropped at Thunder Lake Reality with Denise Green. If she is not there leave it on her desk.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>“WHAT&#8217;S HAPPENING”</p>
<p>There have been many times that comments are repeated that Remer, especially Main Street, needs major improvements or is not being very aggressive in promoting new and established business&#8217;s.  I tend to disagree.  There are numerous small towns throughout the nation that are struggling and suffering to survive, as we are.  I feel that Remer, has done a tremendous job during and before these hard economic times, by just maintaining what we have.  A time will come when we will again have no empty store fronts in the city, right now there is only three.  Please support our local community and try &#038; provide a psychological boost, when a positive and beneficial idea or constructive element can be added to the financial &#038; psychological well being of the residents of the City of Remer, business owners and residents of the surrounding area. This list of developments, both inside and outside the city, will give you an idea of “WHATS HAPPENING”. </p>
<p>1.	The Remer Spur – Remer Mobil has undergone a complete renovation with new store front and name change to the Clark Station, along with sub sandwiches and an arcade.  The look is fantastic.<br />
2.	A new addition to the Bethany Lutheran Church building has added an excellent new look to both the interior and the exterior.  What a beautiful addition.<br />
3.	A new owner of the Remer Junction, Cennex, has made some very desirable &#038; positive additions to that business, including a new log sided store front.<br />
4.	The Alliance Church, located on Main Street added a new front to their building and has dramatically improved the visual appearance with landscaping, siding, sidewalks &#038; covered walkway.  Great design.<br />
5.	The newly refurbished Soo Line Depot, along with the recently painted caboose has added that special one of kind character to downtown Remer.<br />
6.	Woodland Bank has and is currently cleaning and preparing a new business site next to the Soo Line Depot building.  What an improvement to an eyesore that has been there for far too long.  Thanks Woodland Bank.<br />
7.	Remer Liquor as of summer of 2011 has been involved in a renovation project.<br />
8.	The Remer Clinic building under went a complete renovation with a new owner, the Nicklason Family.  This included an addition and remodel; it is now a first class modern health care facility serving the people in the surrounding Area.<br />
9.	The Crosby Eye Clinic became a tenant of the new Remer Clinic Building.<br />
10.	The Remer Trading Post was moved to a new building at the Junction of Highway #6 and #200.  A new service was added to their business, NAPA auto parts and service with a full time auto mechanic.<br />
11.	The old Remer Trading Post building had a new business move in, called “Second Chance”; this too has added a new addition to Main Street.<br />
12.	Remer Auto has new owners and they completely remodeled the interior, including a new dramatic look to the exterior. This has become a modern car care facility.<br />
13.	Motel was sold and the new owners are: Elaine and Charles Nelson from Remer.<br />
14.	The old Drive Inn on the corner of 2nd Street and Main was torn down and now holds three thriving business’s located in a new building, Woodland Insurance, Shaw and Shaw Attorney&#8217;s &#038; Woodsbay Realty.<br />
15.	Main Topic is a new business, now located in a building that was vacant for many years. It too is a very attractive building &#038; hair styling business located on Main Street. This business did a complete remodel both inside and outside.<br />
16.	Scott Matheson, past owner of the Woodsman Cafe purchased Hi Tech Milling and changed the name to Cut Stock Lumber.  Scott and Marie have been very aggressive to increase &#038; maintain sales.  They have been able to increase the number of employees in these slower economic times.  They just completed a high tech state of the art sawmill including AN INCREASE OF SEVERAL EMPLOYEES.  Congratulations Scott and Marie Matheson.<br />
17.	The Woodsman Inn was sold to Bob and Julie Stoeckel and they are doing a great job in their endeavor to make it an aggressive and profitable business. The previous owner completed an exterior renovation of the Woodsman with an inviting &#038; modern exterior.<br />
18.	Bob &#038; Julie Stoeckel purchased the building next door to the Woodsman Cafe and did a total remodel and construction of a new ice cream shop &#038; office space to a building that had been empty for many years. Congratulations.<br />
19.	The Remer Chamber of Commerce is presently working on raising funds for a new lighted sign to be placed in front of the Soo Line Depot.<br />
20.	A young couple just purchased a older property in need of repair and updating. They are going to renovate the home, improving the residential city of Remer. That&#8217;s four new people moving to Remer.<br />
21.	The snowmobile and ATV club built a new garage storage building for their equipment.<br />
22.	Northland Schools have hired an enthusiastic band teacher with high expectations for a newly improved marching band.  New equipment has been purchased for a new drum line.<br />
23.	Two new split rock welcome to Remer signs, were installed at the west and east entries to the city.<br />
24.	The Remer Fire Department just ordered a new state of the art fire truck. Now there is a proud group of fire fighters.  This will be quite a day when the new fire truck arrives as the firemen need a big thank you.<br />
25.	Three new ministers for the Congregational Church, Alliance Church and Bethany Lutheran Church have been hired, providing new enthusiasm to their congregations.<br />
26.	Conrad Johnson remodeled and moved his school &#038; church to a brand new dynamic facility on the out skirts of Remer.<br />
27.	Johnson Telephone has added thousands of square feet to their new buildings and office space to their facilities.<br />
28.	The Remer Food Shelf moved to new quarters, providing renewed enthusiasm to help in the distribution of food for the needy.<br />
29.	A new postmaster was hired and is providing his unending support for the business community and the Remer Chamber of Commerce.<br />
30.	Stefan Partners built a new building to house Stefan Electric with office space and three storage units.<br />
31.	Do it Best Hardware has changed hands, the new owners; Gary and Linda Knox are providing new ideas for that business, including a new flower shop.<br />
32.	Gothmann Construction was purchased by Marc Ruyak providing a renewed spirit to improve &#038; grow that business.<br />
33.	OUR NEW WATER TOWER and sewer extensions have been added to the city.<br />
34.	Interior additions &#038; enlarged facilities to the city hall were completed providing for group meetings..<br />
35.	Woodland Bank, now has satellite sites in Grand Rapids, Hill City, Jenkins, Deer River, Longville &#038; Cohasset.<br />
36.	A new family. Deb &#038; Larry Fiegen moved to Remer with an established business named Deb&#8217;s Quilting Service.  Quilting quilt tops for customers with a long arm quilting machine.<br />
37.	In its first year of operation, a farmers market has been established at the Soo Depot Site, a struggling first year can only get better as more people participate. The market is open Friday afternoons during the months of Aug., Sept. &#038; Oct.<br />
38.	The Alliance Church, located on Main Street, added a new front to their building that changed the appearance dramatically, with landscaping, siding &#038; sidewalks.<br />
39.	The Harvest Church also added a new business to Main Street called, Higher Grounds, a specialty cafe, this addition added a delightful touch to a very much improved Main Street.<br />
40.	Laurel Lodge, owned &#038; operated by Dean &#038; Debra Engen,  Daniel &#038; Wendy Winger, opened a 10 unit elderly care facility. This facility serves senior citizens from both our local area and nation wide.  This is an exceptional care facility in an ever increasing market.<br />
41.	The Remer Elementary School earned a national blue ribbon award for excellence.  A group from Northland Public Schools went to Washington D. C. to receive the award.<br />
42.	Both the Remer Elementary and Northland High school received, from the Minnesota State Department of Education, excellent ratings in the education of our students, outdistancing other schools in our area, including the schools located in Grand Rapids,  Bena, Walker, Hill City, Pine River &#038; Crosby Ironton.<br />
43.	Woodland Bank enlarged their main office building located in Remer, by tearing down a cafe known as, Four Seasons Cafe. They replaced the old with a new enlarged modern facility.<br />
44.	A new business began operation with landscaping and lawn maintenance, called Thunder Lake Lawn Service, owned and operated by Rett Johnson.<br />
45.	Deer Haven Supper Club on Big Thunder Lake suffered a complete loss of their building due to a devastating fire.  The loss was complete, however, out of the ruins came a new facility that is superb.  Same excellent food with a new and improved atmosphere and supper club.<br />
46.	Clayton Langenbacher started a new business called Clayton Plumbing after working for Remer Plumbing &#038; Heating for over 30 years.<br />
47.	Daniel Procopio started a new business venture called Procopio Auto Body with a new home and other out buildings housing his auto repair and body shop. Located just north of Remer on Highway #6.<br />
48.	A new business is just now opening in the front office space of Remer Plumbing &#038; Heating, called Robin&#8217;s Nest Quilt Shop &#038; Ceramics.  This new endeavor is owned and operated by Mike and Robin Engen.  Located on Highway #200 West.<br />
49.	Luke Holter started his new business called Holter&#8217;s Snowplowing &#038; Lawn Service.  Way to go Luke.<br />
50.	Tammy and Steve Cash have opened a senior citizen care facility, called Pleasant Pines &#038; serve the elderly in their home. They have been very successful in attracting those people who need the type of care they are providing. Good going Steve and Tammy.<br />
51.	Remer Arts &#038; Crafts has been busy cleaning and displaying their move in the Remer Pharmacy building located on Main Street.  This has been a tremendous improvement to the business community on Main Street.  Looks Great.<br />
52.	Curt Hemsworth bought an 18 wheeler and started a new trucking firm and is working in South Dakota and the surrounding area.  He is very busy.  Good luck in your new venture. </p>
